Changing Media Landscape

What does the “change in the media landscape” mean to the creation, dissemination, and consumption of information such as news, advertising, and corporate messaging? For instance, what effect do you believe social and convergent media had on the reporting of the BP oil catastrophe in the gulf?

Changing the media landscape affects almost everything the goes on in media. Instead of just 1 person company or government talking to many, the many can now talk back. The news is reported everyday on issues around the world nationally or locally. The new media landscape the bystander can now become the reporter of the news. Such as in the Ted talk the earthquake that hit china was first known about over twitter. In the past the Chinese news channels and governments would be spreading the news to the world but instead non professionals were spreading the news in 140 characters or less. Since people can now become the first disseminators of news the credibility of certain things can and will be diminished a little bit. The disseminators can easily exaggerate or be wrong on something which will cause the world to think wrong. Once the real story is let out by the government or news portrayals of the story will be much more accurate. Social and Convergent media blew up the BP oil spill much more then anyone expected. In the past an oil spill would happen but then BP would make a statement and say everything is under control in the newspapers or television. But with the recent Oil spill non professional reporters blow the spill out of proportion starting up charity groups, riots, and protests. The people responded and talked back which is new in the media landscape. The new media landscape gives people more control of the world around them.

Social Networks and New Media

Now, take a moment to think about social networks and new media. What do these concepts mean to you? Are they related or different? How do you believe social networks and new media have and will change how we communicate with one another?

To me social networks is a way of connecting and networking with friends over the internet. We are social creatures so with the options we have to be social us as humans take advantage of it. Everyone is also curious and social networks let us look into peoples lives a little bit at a time regardless if they like it or not. Social Networks open up a bridge of connection to everyone around the world. New Media to me is a magazine, journal, or news channel. Media lets people know what is going on in the world. Some good things and some bad but media always lets people know the news of the world. Social Networks and Media can be similar in some aspects but also different. Social Network and New Media both share the news. Although social networks are more personal as in knowing what is going on with your friends or enemies. New Media gives local news, national, and even international news that may not effect you personally. Social Networks can also share new media news if the individual on the social network device choses to follow or look at the news media site. Social Networks have given people the ability to communicate even if a telephone is not available. People report news media on social networks which is a way to communicate. People always are communicating and social network gives people the ability look at news media in a quicker and simpler way. Most of the world is impatient so the faster and simpler a person can do things that person will do it.
